Overview of South Okanagan & Similkameen Valleys
Residential Communities: Penticton, Kaleden, OK Falls, Oliver, Osoyoos, Twin Lakes, Keremeos, Cawston, Olalla, Hedley
Each area has it's own unique attributes. But, all areas are fast becoming "retirement mecca's of choice" for the expanding Boomer generation.
Granted, we're a little biased but for anyone who already lives here, it's no suprise. The climate, the scenery and the location are 2nd to none.
Climate: Semi-Arid with annual rainfall hovering around 10" - 12". Osoyoos (the most southerly area) enjoys the least annual rainfall (at 9.8"/yr) and is classified as a desert.
Sunshine: Average Annual Sunshine is over 2000 hours!!!!!
Scenery: The Okanagan-Similkameen area boasts 3 breathtakingly gorgeous lakes: Okanagan, Skaha & Osoyoos. These warm water lakes have been drawing regular vacationers from Canada and the US for years & years. Public & private campgrounds, motels & hotels fill up in the summer as tourists take advantage of the climate and the lakes.
And, the orchards and wineries in the Valleys have long appealed to those wishing to buy superior product direct from the growers. Keremeos for example boasts more fruit stands than any other fruit-growing area in Canada. And, Cawston is well known for it's organic crops. Some of the finest wineries in BC are located in the South Okanagan-Similkameen. Visitors from all over the world enjoy stopping in at the estate wineries in Oliver, Osoyoos, Cawston and Narramata near Penticton for tours and tastes. (or should we say "tasty-tours").
Location: For those who enjoy winter sports, Apex Mountain Resort is a mere 30-35 minutes from Penticton and Keremeos and Olalla. And, Mount Baldy is about 35 mins from Oliver. Access to Vancouver's Lower Mainland is approx 3 1/2 hours from Keremeos & 4 - 4 1/2 hours from Osoyoos, Penticton & Oliver along Hwy 3. Golf enthusiasts have several courses to choose from. Twin Lakes Golf Resort is just off Hwy 3A between Penticton & Keremeos. St.Andews by the Lake Golf Course is on White Lake Road between Penticton & Osoyoos. If you haven't checked out the communities within BC's South Okanagan-Similkameen regions, you should. These areas are growing and real estate prices are rising accordingly. Having said that, these areas are still affordable according to BC standards. Whether you want to escape the congestion and hectic-pace of the Lower Mainland; leave the harsh prairie winters behind; secure recreational property while prices are still affordable; or, just generally avail yourself of a lifestyle that includes beaches, mountains, orchards, wineries, minimal rainfall and lots of sunshine - the South Okanagan-Similkameen is the place to be!
If you're the laid-back type and you desire a quiet lifestyle, we suggest you check-out Keremeos (pop. 1200), Cawston (pop. 850), Olalla (pop 600) Residents in these communities enjoy a quiet village atmosphere in a gorgeous mountain-valley setting yet they are only 35 & 40 minutes respectively from the grandeur of the lakes in Penticton & Osoyoos.
Or, for those seeking larger centers, Penticton (pop approx. 33,000), Osoyoos (pop approx 6,000), or Oliver (pop approx 9,000) may suit you better.
